New Year’s Day 2027 and 2028

Hong Kong celebrates New Year’s Day with a public holiday every 1 January, as does most of the rest of the world. However, the celebrations really begin on New Year’s Eve and reach a high point with the turning of the clock from 11:59pm on 31 December to midnight on 1 January.

In 2027, New Year’s Day falls on Friday 1 January. The holiday will be on Saturday 1 January in 2028.

While New Year’s Day according to the Gregorian Calendar is a minor holiday in most of mainland China, it is a somewhat bigger event here in Hong Kong. The fact that Hong Kong was under UK control for a century has a lot to do with the difference.

Many in Hong Kong will watch the great public fireworks displays at Victoria Harbour or near Tsim Sha Tsui. There are also live concerts, parades, all-night dance parties, and more.

At Victora Harbor, the massive fireworks show explodes against a clear view of the Hong Kong skyline. At Tsim Sha Tsui, people can shop at malls and street markets and dine at restaurants while colourful fireworks explode in the background. On New Year’s Eve, there are local parades that last until 10pm, followed by parties in the streets and in local pubs and diners.
